چکیده

The simple Bayesian classi er (SBC), sometimes called Naive-Bayes, is built based on a conditional independence model of each attribute given the class. The model was previously shown to be surprisingly robust to obvious violations of this independence assumption, yielding accurate classi cation models even when there are clear conditional dependencies. The SBC can serve as an excellent tool for initial exploratory data analysis when coupled with a visualizer that makes its structure comprehensible. We describe such a visual representation of the SBC model that has been successfully implemented. We describe the requirements we had for such a visualization and the design decisions we made to satisfy them.

Adjusted Probability Naive Bayesian Induction

Naive Bayesian classi ers utilise a simple mathematical model for induction. While it is known that the assumptions on which this model is based are frequently violated, the predictive accuracy obtained in discriminate classi cation tasks is surprisingly competitive in comparison to more complex induction techniques. Adjusted probability naive Bayesian induction adds a simple extension to the n...

Beyond Independence: Conditions for the Optimality of the Simple Bayesian Classi er

The simple Bayesian classi er (SBC) is commonly thought to assume that attributes are independent given the class, but this is apparently contradicted by the surprisingly good performance it exhibits in many domains that contain clear attribute dependences. No explanation for this has been proposed so far. In this paper we show that the SBC does not in fact assume attribute independence, and ca...

A Simple Approach to Building Ensembles of Naive Bayesian Classi ers for Word Sense Disambiguation

This paper presents a corpus-based approach to word sense disambiguation that builds an ensemble of Naive Bayesian classi ers, each of which is based on lexical features that represent co{occurring words in varying sized windows of context. Despite the simplicity of this approach, empirical results disambiguating the widely studied nouns line and interest show that such an ensemble achieves acc...
